Alentejo, Southern Portugal. Dozens of amateur groups meet regularly to rehearse old polyphonic chants and improvise traditions in the present tense. This is the “cante”.
Born in taverns and fields, among peasants and miners, this “cante” has passed down over generations. In recent decades, with the Alentejo diaspora, new groups have appeared on the outskirts of Lisbon and in several emigration countries – proving that singing is na identity trait of the people of Alentejo, wherever they are.
